International Competition Schedule

 Introduction

1.1 The Coronavirus pandemic has forced the postponement of a series of IFAF-sanctioned tournaments that were due to take place in 2020.

1.2 Accommodating these tournaments at a later date, likely to be 2021, is important in order for federations, players, coaches and team staff to fulfil the hard work and financial investment they have made. However, it does create issues in enabling effective calendars to be planned and investment to be made for some nations which will see an increased programme of national team activity at a time when finances may have been hit hard.

1.3 The inclusion of Flag Football in The World Games in 2022 has also presented IFAF with a unique opportunity but this too, requires an accommodating schedule.

The Operating Framework

2.1 This document aims to set out the overarching tournament planner for IFAF events for the foreseeable future.

2.2 This document will act as the framework within which continental competition committees will work to capacity-build regional and continental activity, considering the needs of their respective member nations.

2020 Global Championships

3.1 There were three global championships scheduled in 2020 – the IFAF U19 World Championship, and the women and men’s IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

3.2 IFAF is currently working with a member federation on the staging of the IFAF U19 World Championship in 2021. If the plan passes the feasibility study IFAF will work with the nations that confirmed their intent to compete in 2020 to assess their capability to attend. This time-limited exercise will determine whether or not the tournament is staged.

3.3 If the tournament is staged IFAF recognises that there will have to be accommodation made for the national teams qualifying from Europe as they may have scheduled continental activity too. IFAF will charge the continental competition committee to explore ways in which this can be accommodated. The 2024 event will not be moved and will proceed as planned in Canada.

3.4 The age bracket for this championship will increase by 1 year to allow players to be eligible who would have otherwise competed in 2020. This will mark a permanent shift to a U20 World Championship.

3.5 The IFAF Flag Football World Championships were due to be staged in Denmark in 2020.

3.6 Given the postponement, IFAF can confirm that it is seeking nations to bid to become hosts for the 2021 event. This bidding process will be against the IFAF Major Events documentation along with some specific criteria add for these championships – to be published shortly. The bidding window will close on September 25 2020.

3.7 It is anticipated that the event will take place after the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

2021 Global Championships

4.1 In 2021 Finland were due to host the IFAF World Championship (women’s tackle). This has been moved to 2022.

4.2 As a consequence of this all future championships (World Championship and continental – should a single tournament format be used) will move back one year.

4.3 This new cycle can be seen below:

4.4 At present only Europe has a significant continental championship on a quadrennial basis. IFAF will work with the Continental Competition Committees to establish the most appropriate formats to foster development between each World Championship. This may see a move away from single tournament events.

A Modified Calendar

5.1 The principle changes to the IFAF Competition Calendar will come in the IFAF Flag Football programme.

5.2 There will be an evolution in the approach to Flag Football championships as the format is the primary platform for engagement in multi-sport championships.

5.3 It is conceivable that there will be an increasing number of events that IFAF nations are invited to, be it on a global scale (The World Games) or a continental / regional level. As such, we must prepare for nations to be able to compete in more than one event each year so as to avoid continual rearrangements of our events or not being able to effectively commit to and service events led by third parties.

5.4 2021 will prioritise an IFAF Flag Football World Championships over continental events.

5.5 The 2021 IFAF Flag Football World Championships will provide the entry route into the 2022 World Games competition, scheduled for Birmingham, Alabama.

5.6 In 2022 The World Games will be the primary competition. There will be an opportunity for continents to arrange continental activity in 2022 so long as it does not conflict with the scheduling of The World Games. In terms of formal continental championships, that would have to be confirmed. If nations are competing at The World Games and are unable to compete in a continental event due to costs it may be considered unfair that they miss out on the opportunity to compete for a continental title.

5.7 2023 would see a resumption (Europe) or creation (other continents) of continental events. These will occur on a two-year cycle: 2023 – 2025 – 2027.

5.8 The IFAF Flag Football World Championships would then return in 2024 on a two-year cycle: 2024 – 2026 – 2028.

5.9 Whilst the IFAF Flag Football World Championships are currently ‘open entry’ to member nations that meet the criteria there will be a move towards qualification through continental activity.

5.10 Should IFAF meet its aspiration of inclusion in the Olympic programme the World Championships scheduled for Olympic year would be replaced with the Olympic Games. It is anticipated that nations would qualify through continental activity the previous year.

5.11 The Senior Tackle (Men) will continue as currently planned. The next World Championship will be held in 2023 with future championships on a four-year cycle. Continental Competition Committees will work to decide what qualification format works most effectively for nations in their jurisdiction.

ワールドゲームスに出場したことで、コストが原因で大陸の競技会に出場できず、大陸のタイトルを競う機会を逃すことは不当と見なされる可能性があります。

5.7  2023年は、大陸イベントの再開（ヨーロッパ）または作成（他の大陸）を行います。これらは、2023 – 2025 – 2027の2年周期で発生します。

5.8  IFAFフラッグフットボール世界選手権は、2024年に2024 – 2026 – 2028の2年間のサイクルで復帰します。

5.9  IFAFフラッグフットボール世界選手権は現在、基準を満たしている加盟国への「オープンエントリー」ですが、大陸での活動による資格取得への動きがあります。

5.10  IFAFがオリンピックプログラムに組み込まれるという願望が満たされた場合、オリンピック開催年に予定されている世界選手権はオリンピックに置き換えられます。各国は前年度の大陸での活動を通じて資格を得ると予想されています。

Emerging Programmes

IFAF Flag Football (U18 variants – female and male)

Discussions have taken place about the scheduling of continental championships for young players. IFAF will work with the Continental Competition Committees to explore these further. IFAF will standardise age brackets for these events.

IFAF Tackle Football (small-sided variants – female and male)

There is an increasing demand for emerging nations (and some established ones) to play small-sided tackle football. IFAF will work with the Continental Competition Committees to explore these further. IFAF will standardise age brackets for these events.

Global championships for the above will be considered once continental activity has proven sustainable.
